The Wensleydale Railway runs for seventeen miles from Leeming Bar along a line which closed to regular passenger trains in 1954, but has remained open for quarry traffic and occasional military trains. The line is now leased to the Wensleydale Railway who run a passenger service. Trainloads of tanks going to/from Catterick still use the line as well.
The Wensleydale is unusual in that steam engines are not used. Instead, heritage diesel units provide excellent views of the scenery.
